Big Heart —
She had a huge heart. She was always thinking of ways to
help others — even during her illness. There was a
girl in our area with the exact same cancer as Asma. She
was also the same age. Once Asma found out about this, she
was looking forward to meeting her and becoming friends
with her. Asma told us that she was going to advise and
help this girl along the way, since she has been through
it herself and knows what it's like to be in that position.
Asma had even gotten a present for this girl. Although Asma
had good intentions and was eager to meet her, her heart
was broken when she realized the girl’s family did not want
their daughter to meet Asma.
Whenever people would come over to our
home, Asma would sit at her bed with a big box with the
words, “Asma’s Candy Box” written on it. She would sit as
the kids would line up before her to get some candy. Asma
would pick a candy out and give it to the kids one by one.
She was also the type to extend a helping
hand – especially to my mother. I remember Asma helping
my mother make food as she sat in her wheelchair during
Ramadhan. That is why every year in Ramadhan my mother cries
especially when making food. She misses that very much.
Asma even got herself out of bed and dragged
herself towards my mother because she heard her moan in
pain. Subhaan’Allah…
Having said all that in this interview,
I must mention that Asma was a very shy girl who never liked
to speak unnecessarily. She was wise and kept true to herself
and her family. She soon realized that family was the most
important thing to her after experiencing the treatment
she had received from so-called friends and relatives.
Al-istiqamah: You
wrote on your blog that you had dreams about her, following
her passing?
Omar: We still have dreams
about her. I have flashbacks of her often — both happy
and painful memories. I will wake up crying from dreams
of Asma. I will find myself suddenly thinking about her
while I am in the middle of doing my work or simply trying
to sleep. Not a day goes by without us reminiscing about
the old times shared with Asma.
Al-istiqamah: Is
there anything else you would like to add?
Omar: Yes, I am forever
grateful that Allah Subhanawata’la blessed my family and
me with a person like Asma who taught us the meaning of
patience, love, determination and most of all: faith in
Allah. I can only hope that describing her life and experiences
brings benefit to the Muslims and rest of the world.
May Allah reunite us with Asma once
again. Ameen
May Allah reward my parents for everything that they've
gone through and continue to go through. Ameen
May Allah elevate Asma’s status in Jannah to the highest.
Ameen
May Allah give my parents and family completely sabr. Ameen
Al-istiqamah: Ameen.
Brother Omar, we are truly grateful to have had the opportunity
to conduct this interview with you. We end with a request
that our readers recite the duas (supplications) above for
Asma and her family.
