Al-Istiqamah:
What is your opinion of Muslims working for MI5?
Abu Abdullah: [Laughs]
Well… erm… I’d have difficulty calling them “Muslims”. Many
Muslims fool themselves into thinking that they are doing
something good by cooperating with MI5. They need to sit back
and think: what is the purpose of MI5? What do they want from
you? They want you to seek dish the dirt on another Muslim.
In Islam, we are supposed to look for the good in people and
cover their faults. One of the attributes of Allah is As-Sattaar
- the One who conceals faults. If I inform on a Muslim, am
I helping him, or helping others to oppress him?
Al-Istiqamah:
Do you think that many Muslims are swayed by the notion that
it is their patriotic duty to prevent “terrorism”?
Abu Abdullah: I think it’s
that… along with money. Muslims are often swayed by the fact
that they need to provide for their families. We should ask
ourselves: who is Ar-Razzaq (The Provider)? It is
Allah. If Allah has decreed for us to be without wealth, we
will be. And if He has decreed that we will have millions,
then that will come to us. The Prophet (SAW), his family and
followers were boycotted by the Quraish tribe for three years
– socially and economically. His followers were brutally tortured,
some were killed, but they didn't compromise their religion.
Al-Istiqamah:
What advice would you give to Muslims in the current climate?
Abu Abdullah: I
would say that Muslims need to speak up, but even more than
that, we need to be united. Sometimes we can speak up but
our words have no impact. It’s what we’re ready to put behind
our words. A person can say a million beautiful words and
then go home and forget everything. Today we have too many
voices, but nothing to go behind them. No substance. As Muslims
we have to understand that we are in this situation because
Allah has chosen that for us, because of our actions towards
our deen. As it says in the Qur’aan “Allah will not change
the condition of a people until they change themselves”
If we adopt that formula, the situation around us will change
for the better. We need to go back to Qur’aan and Sunnah [the
Prophetic Way] and that is the only way a Muslim can find
success. We keep trying to adopt other methods which are not
from Islam in order to attain success and this is why we are
not progressing. We must not be defeatist. As Allah
says in the Qur'aan, "Despair not of the Mercy of
Allah".
Al-Istiqamah: Abu Abdullah,
jazaakullah khayran once again for speaking to us.
Abu Abdullah: Wa
iyyakum, brother.
